President Ruto Renames Kericho Green Stadium to Kiprugut Chumo Stadium
On October 20th, President William Ruto announced the official renaming of Kericho Green Stadium to Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in honour of the legendary Kenyan athlete.
He renamed the stadium after The late Wilson arap chuma kiprugut Kenya’s first Olympic medalist to honour him as a national hero.
“Allow me to celebrate Kiprugut Chumo the first Kenyan to win an Olympic medal by renaming this Kericho green stadium after him, I think he deserved it,” President Ruto said.
The late Wilson Arap Chuma Kiprugut was a Kenya sprinter and middle-distance runner He competed at the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico Olympics and won 2 medals in the 800 meters event.
He was the first person from Kenya ever to win an Olympic medal.
Kiprugut grew up in Kericho and began running as a child, his talent was first identified when he ran at East and Central African championships an event where he won no less than three 880-yard titles.
