Farmers in Kapsoya Ward have responded positively to the call by the County Government of Uasin Gishu to diversify their agricultural activities.

Recognizing the potential of underutilized fruits such as gooseberry, hibiscus and strawberry, the residents of Kapsoya Ward have taken up these crops as a means of supplementing their traditional maize farming.

The Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has recognized the potential of gooseberry and classified it as the 7th most important underutilized fruit in the country. This acknowledgment has further encouraged farmers to invest in its cultivation.

To further support and encourage the farmers, Ainabkoi Sub-County Agricultural Officer, Mr. Joel Kiyeny, on Thursday, led the Lucky Self Help Group on a visit to Viola Maina, the founder of the successful Gooseberry Delight Company.

This visit serves as an inspiration for the farmers, as they witness a local entrepreneur who has successfully built a business around these lesser-known fruits.

Viola Maina shared her knowledge and experience with the group, stressing the importance of proper crop management and the need for farmers to diversify their income sources. She highlighted the potential of gooseberry farming to generate substantial profits and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the region.

The Lucky Self-Help Group was inspired by Viola Maina’s success story and the potential of gooseberry farming.

They expressed their intention to venture into gooseberry farming and requested Viola’s guidance and support in setting up their farm.

On her part, Livestock Officer Lilly Talam who was also present commended Viola Maina for her efforts in promoting gooseberry farming and diversifying agricultural practices in the region.

She emphasized the importance of such initiatives in achieving economic growth in Uasin Gishu County.
