Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga, recently led a high-level meeting with representatives from Japan’s Building Center of Japan (BCJ) and the Japan International Association for the Industry of Urban Development, Building, and Housing (JUBH). The session focused on preparations for the upcoming BCJ/JUBH delegation visit to Kenya, scheduled for March 2025.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, explored various investment opportunities in Kenya’s rapidly growing housing, building, and urban development sectors. The Japanese delegation, which includes leading experts from both the public and private sectors, is expected to engage with Kenyan stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for urban growth and infrastructure development.

PS Hinga emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and Japan, particularly in the areas of sustainable urbanization, affordable housing, and advanced building technologies. He noted that the visit will provide a platform for collaboration, allowing both countries to share valuable insights and best practices in urban development.

“Japan’s expertise in urban planning, construction, and sustainable building technologies offers invaluable lessons as Kenya continues to modernize its cities and infrastructure,” said PS Hinga. “This visit will foster new partnerships, open up investment avenues, and advance Kenya’s goal of creating affordable, sustainable housing for its growing population.”

Key discussion points at the meeting included the potential for joint ventures, technology transfer, and capacity-building programs aimed at developing a skilled workforce in the building and construction industries. The Japanese representatives also expressed interest in exploring Kenya’s vast potential for infrastructure development, particularly in the context of the government’s Big Four Agenda and Vision 2030.

The upcoming 2025 delegation visit is seen as a significant step towards enhancing bilateral trade relations and supporting Kenya’s ongoing efforts to modernize its urban landscapes while addressing the challenges of affordable housing and sustainable development.

Both PS Hinga and the Japanese delegation expressed optimism about the outcomes of the partnership, which is poised to contribute to the realization of Kenya’s ambitious urban development goals and create long-term benefits for both countries.
