The Principal Secretary in the State Department of Crop Development in the Ministry of Agriculture Kello Harsama says the government is committed to revitalizing state-owned sugar companies, aiming to boost production and revive the sector.

Earlier Tuesday, the PS engaged with stakeholders to address challenges and chart a path forward for the industry’s resurgence.

“Our consensus is to refrain from harvesting immature cane, as it deprives growers of optimal profits due to reduced weight.

Additionally, millers are encouraged to invest in sugar development within their operational zones, enhancing farmers’ returns.

The government will oversee the adherence to regulations and guidelines governing harvesting and sugar pricing, ensuring that all stakeholders benefit from the value chain.”

AFA Board Chairman Serem Cornelly and Director of the Sugar Department Jude Chesire were among the top government officials in attendance.
