Public servants have decried over taxation in the peaceful procession held from the University of Nairobi to the parliament buildings.

The servants drawn across various unions from Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), and Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) among others were joined by various Azimio La Umoja legislators.

Speaking during the demos, Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed said that tax proposals should only come from members of parliament.

“There is no tax without representation,” said Junet.

He also assured workers that rogue elements in the finance bill will be quashed before the house.
According to Ugunja MP, Opiyo Wandayi workers are not in need of house but are currently struggling with high cost of basic necessities.

“Workers are not desperate for housing and even if they were they have their means of getting houses,” said Wandayi.

The tax proposals in the 2023 Finance Bill have sparked a set of reactions from the public with employees expected to contribute 3% of their basic salary to the housing levy.

A total of 1400 memoranda have been received with only 10 out of 84 entities giving a nod to the bill.
