In a historic move, President William Ruto has appointed Hon. Rebecca Miano as Kenya’s first female Attorney General, marking a significant milestone in the country’s legal and political landscape. Miano’s appointment makes her the ninth Attorney General since Kenya gained independence, following a distinguished line of predecessors including Charles Mugane Njonjo, James Karugu, Joseph Kamere, Mathew Muli, Amos Wako, Professor Githu Muigai, Kihara Kariuki, and Justin Bedan Muturi.

Leaders from various sectors swiftly extended their congratulations to Hon. Miano, recognizing her groundbreaking achievement. Dr. Hon Ekrah Ndung’u, Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges, was among the first to offer her felicitations. “We acknowledge His Excellency the President’s empowerment of women through the elevation and appointment of Hon. AG Rebecca Miano EGH as Kenya’s first female Attorney General,” Ndung’u stated.

Miano, a prominent figure in Kenya’s political arena, previously held two significant ministerial roles in President Ruto’s administration. She served as the Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry, and earlier as the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development. Her extensive experience in government is expected to inform her approach as the country’s chief legal advisor.

This appointment not only celebrates Miano’s individual achievements but also represents a broader commitment to gender equality in Kenya’s leadership structures. As Kenya’s first female Attorney General, Miano’s tenure is anticipated to bring new perspectives to the role and advance the cause of justice and legal reform in the country.
