Residents Give Input on County Climate Change Draft Bill
Residents of Kiminini on Tuesday tabled their proposals on what should be contained in the County’s Environmental Laws as the draft Trans Nzoia County Climate Change Bill 2023 was subjected for Public Participation.
The residents who converged at the Kiminini Redeemed Gospel Church in Kiminini township and Kitale Pentecostal Church in Section 19 for the exercise were taken through the draft Bill by facilitators from the County Climate Change Unit (CCU).
Outgoing County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change (WENRCC) Patrick Gacheru who oversaw the exercise noted that the new law will support Climate Change mitigation and adaptation measures.
He emphasised on the need to conserve the environment with emphasis on the wetlands that he noted to have been encroached on and degraded as a result of human activities such as farming and grazing of livestock.
The CECM hailed GIZ, the German Foundation that has supported the County Administration in the document formulation from the onset even as he appealed for further support with an expert to help incorporate aspects of Carbon Credit Trading in the Bill.
Gacheru articulated Governor George Natembeya’s pledges of making Trans Nzoia green adding that the County Chief was already walking the talk just as he assured that more would be undertaken to make the county a better place.
At the Kitale Pentecostal Church in Section Six where residents of Sirende, Hospital, Bidii, Tuwan and Matisi wards within the Municipality converged, the public gave their input on the draft Bill in the exercise also attended by WENRCC Chief Officer Dorothy Nyukuri.
The Chief Officer who has been at the forefront in spearheading the laying up of legal frameworks that address the effects of Climate Change encouraged the participants, including members of the WCCPCs present to put the interests of the community first as opposed to giving inputs of ideas that only favor individuals or particular interest groups.
Public Partcipation exercise for the draft Bill will also be conducted at Saboti Friends Church and Kenya Assemblies of God Church in Saboti and Endebbes Sub Counties respectively on Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
On Thursday, a similar exercise will be carried out at the Deliverance Church in Kachibora and New testament Church in Sibanga, both in Cherangany Sub County as well as at Kwanza Polytechnic in Kwanza Sub County.
Once in place, the Bill will repeal the Trans Nzoia County Climate Change Fund Act, 2022 that is currently in place.
