Residents Urged To Screen For Sickle Cell Before Getting Married
CECM for Health Dr. Andrew Wamalwa has urged Bungoma residents to prioritize screening for sickle cell before getting married to avert spreading the disease to their offspring.
Wamalwa reiterated the need to manage the disease through regular check ups attributing the spread to lack of knowledge on screening saying the affected persons are put on medication immediately the disease is detected to prevent more body attacks.
He pointed out that with the recent opening of Haemophilia and sickle cell special clinic at Bungoma county Referral Hospital, it will be a relief for patients who seek for such services.
The CECM affirmed that the county Government is working around the clock to equip other sickle cell clinics across the sub counties and have specialized officers to deal with the victims.
Bungoma county has 692 cases of sickle cell disease on follow up in various clinics across all sub county hospitals.
