Road Users Urged to Save Lives by Observing Traffic Rules
Uasin Gishu Roads, Transport and Public Works County Executive Committee Member Eng. Joseph Lagat has urged road users to be keen on the road and observe traffic rules as a better way of reducing road accident casualties cases significantly and saving lives that occur on a day-to-day basis due to recklessness.
The CECM spoke at the Eldoret Law Courts Grounds on Sunday during an event to Mark the 2022 World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims. Representing Governor Jonathan Bii, the CECM said that accidents have led to many families becoming impoverished due to high bills spent on patients in hospitals and many more left disabled.
“If all road users can observe road traffic rules, these accidents will be avoided and a lot of money being channeled for medical treatment will be used for development projects in our society,” noted CECM Lagat
Earlier, the CECM flagged off the Uasin Gishu firefighters and rescue team as he lauded them for their commitment to rescue operations and disaster management. He then accompanied the team on a road show to create awareness of the importance of remembering road victims and acting to support them. The theme of the day was Remember, Support, Act as it put more focus on JUSTICE.
“Road accident is a disaster that continues day in and day out across our county and country. It is an actual pandemic, affecting primarily our vulnerable and our youth, which in addition to the trauma of injury and bereavement has also a devastating economic impact on families and government,” said CECM Lagat
The day is commemorated every year with objectives to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to:
remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads; acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services; promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries among others.
The event was attended by various stakeholders including NTSA, Police, Judiciary, Uasin Gishu County Government, County Fire team, Eldoret Hospital, Eldoret Polytechnic, Rvtti, Public transport (matatu) industry, MTRH, Religious leaders, and the public.
