Rwabura Irrigation Development Project Nears Completion, Promising Economic Opportunities in Kiambu County

Principal Secretary for Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, earlier today, inspected the Rwabura irrigation scheme project in Kiambu County. This comes two months after the PS held discussions with Spanish ambassador H.E. Ms. Cristina Díaz Fernandez-Gil who paid him a courtesy call in October. The visit by the Spanish ambassador unlocked the financing that will enable the completion of Phase 1 and will be ready for commissioning by H.E the President in early March.

The project, implemented by the State Department for Irrigation through the National Irrigation Authority will bring 1,500 acres under irrigation through a €6.8 Million investment (KES 1.2 Billion).

“The completion of the Rwabura Irrigation Development Project will economically empower the Gatundu area of Kiambu County and beyond while enhancing food security. This project will see the creation of 7,500 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs, and we estimate that the project will inject KES 600 million annually into the local economy,” said PS Kimotho.

The PS, while at a model farm issued irrigation systems to farmers , fruit tree seedlings, and certificates of training.

Joined by the area MP Hon. Wakagombe the PS assured farmers of the Government’s full support and inclusion.

The area MP Hon. Wakagombe, while addressing the congregants, took lead in echoing the importance of the project to farmers and the community at large , urging them to embrace the project since it is geared towards ensuring a community that is financially secure.

The PS was flagged by NIA C.E.O Charles Muasya, Ag. Irrigation Secretary Vincent Kabuti, National and County government officials amongst others.
