The five winners in the second draw for the Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa campaign by Safaricom have been announced. The lucky winners of KES. 1 million are Mbula Munyasya, Erick Kanumbi, Givonce Otieno, Kenneth Kiprono and Jackson Habagusaba.

In addition to the KES 1 million, they will receive an additional KES. 250,000 each courtesy of the Safaricom Foundation to support any community initiative of their choice. The community fund guarantees that the promotion benefits the entire community, in addition to the individual winners.

The first winner, Kenneth Kiprono, a 48-year-old businessman in Eldoret had seen the campaign advertised and decided to try his luck. He owns a bookshop in Eldoret town and hopes to use his winnings to add stock, to serve the schools in the area. He has been a long-time customer of Safaricom since its beginning and has never changed his line. He plans to use the additional KES. 250,000 community fund to support and resource the library of his local school.

“I was over the moon when I received the call from Safaricom. I had never won anything in my life before, so I was so elated by the news. This came at a great time as schools in the area are reopening, and I need to replenish the stock of my bookstore. I am thankful to Safaricom for this tremendous opportunity and will continue to serve as Safaricom customer for the foreseeable future,” he said.

Givonce Otieno is an aspiring poultry farmer who is a teacher by profession; however, he is currently unemployed. Givonce hails from Siaya County, from the town of Gem. He didn’t believe he had won when he received the call. Givonce plans to use the money to advance his sugarcane farming and start a poultry farming project. He also plans to buy water tanks for his local primary school using the additional KES 250,000 from Safaricom Foundation.

Jackson Habagusaba, originally from Uganda, is a 35-year-old shoe seller who owns a store in the city of Machakos. Jackson moved from Uganda seven years ago looking for a better business and working climate, and he was elated to find out that he had emerged as one of the winners. This means he will be able to enlarge his business and consider beginning other projects, such as poultry farming.

“I want to congratulate the winners of the second draw. The different stories of these individuals really illuminate the reason we do this. Our purpose is to transform the lives of our customers so that they go on to do great things in their lives. We are but a conduit that provides the necessary tools for Kenyans to Shine,” said Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive Officer, Safaricom PLC.

Mary Mbula Munyasya is a 32-year-old single mother of three from Kiambu. She originally hails from Mwea. She currently works at a club. When she received the news of her win, she

was skeptical and even suspected a scam, requiring multiple calls to convince her of the reality. Eventually the reality downed. She plans to construct pit latrines in her rural center in Mwea with the additional KES 250,000.

Last but not least is Erick Kanumbi, a 23-year-old decorator from Nanyuki. Despite starting his education in engineering, Erick had to pause his studies due to financial constraints. He hopes to use his winnings to return to school and complete his degree. Erick learned about the campaign through Safaricom’s SMS notifications, which informed him of his entry into the draw.
