SANITATION BOOST FOR MALABA BUS PARK AS ABLUTION BLOCK NEARS COMPLETION

Malaba Bus park in Teso North Sub county is set for full operations as the construction of modern sanitation block nears completion.

The Kshs 2.9 million facility which houses toilets, restrooms and wash basins is a necessity at the park to for communal use by commuters, bus operators, traders and residents.

Acting County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, John Mwami said the project is part of a long-term plan to improve the border Municipality to maximise on its position as the gateway to East and Central Africa, and thus attract investors.

“Malaba Municipality is set to receive Sh 200 million grant from World Bank that will give this town a major facelift just like Busia. Our aim is to ensure we use these funds prudently to benefit residents,” he said.

Chief Officer for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Andrew Otiti said the department is keen on passing by-laws and policies that will enhance trade in the two Municipalities.

“Our target is to boost revenue by over 50 per cent. We are also in the process of rehabilitating Busia Bus park following the awarding of the tender.”

Once operational, the park with a cumulative cost of Kshs 10.4 m is expected to serve between 15 -20 Matatus at ago and also create over 100 jobs directly for traders.

The County Government of Busia is expected to collect an estimated monthly revenue of Kshs 200,000 as disclosed by County Revenue Director Chris Illikor.
