Principal Secretary of the State Department for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and Regional Development, Kello Harsama, recently received a courtesy call from the Economists Society of Kenya (ESK). The meeting focused on key strategies to strengthen the planning functions within the State Department and enhance capacity building among the Society’s members, particularly in the ASAL regions. During the meeting, PS Harsama emphasized the importance of improving planning frameworks to address the unique challenges faced by ASALs, and expressed the need for further collaboration to support sustainable development in these areas. He also highlighted the significance of capacity building for local economists and stakeholders to effectively manage and implement developmental projects within the region. “I thank the Economists Society of Kenya for the insightful engagement. Strengthening planning functions and empowering professionals is crucial for fostering growth and resilience in the ASAL regions,” said PS Harsama. Representing the Economists Society of Kenya at the meeting was Lucy Njaramba, the National Vice Chairperson, who led a delegation of Executive Committee members. The group shared valuable insights on how the Society can support the State Department’s goals and contribute to the development of the ASAL regions. The meeting marked an important step towards fostering closer collaboration between government agencies and professional organizations to address the challenges and opportunities in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas. Both parties expressed optimism for continued partnership to enhance the region's socio-economic development through research, policy advocacy, and capacity building initiatives.
