By Lucy Jemeli In a dramatic turn of events, Meru County has officially welcomed a new governor following a lengthy legal battle surrounding the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza. In March 2025, the High Court delivered its final ruling, upholding the Senate’s decision to remove Mwangaza from office. This verdict brought an end to months of uncertainty in the county’s leadership and paved the way for Deputy Governor Rev. Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia to take office. Governor Mwangaza was impeached by the Meru County Assembly in August 2024 on charges of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of the Constitution. Despite challenging her impeachment in court, the Senate’s decision to remove her was initially suspended by the High Court, allowing Mwangaza to briefly resume office. However, the High Court’s final ruling in March 2025 upheld the Senate’s decision, leading to the official transition of power. In a solemn ceremony, Rev. Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia was sworn in as the new Governor of Meru County. “I, Isaac Mutuma, do swear as Governor of Meru County, so help me God,” he declared during the swearing-in, signaling the start of a new chapter for the region. In his first address as governor, Mutuma emphasized unity and progress, focusing on the need to move beyond political divisions and work toward the development of Meru County. "I am committed to serving the people of Meru with integrity and dedication. Together, we will move forward, and I believe this county will see great progress in the days ahead," he said. The transition to Governor Mutuma’s leadership marks a significant moment for Meru County, which had been embroiled in political turmoil over the past months. With a clear call for cohesion and forward-looking leadership, Governor Mutuma's inauguration has raised hopes among residents for stability and development under his governance. As the county embarks on this new phase, all eyes will be on the incoming leadership to address key issues and steer Meru County towards greater prosperity and unity.
