Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi has sounded the alarm on the escalating issue of illicit alcohol consumption, citing its detrimental impact on road safety and public health. Addressing the pressing concern during a public statement, Mrs. Rigathi emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to curb the rising trend of alcohol-related accidents nationwide.

Attributing the surge in road accidents to the increased intake of illegal alcohol, Mrs. Rigathi underscored the importance of addressing alcohol and substance abuse as a critical priority. She highlighted the sobering reality that accidents, whether caused by sober or intoxicated individuals, continue to claim lives and devastate communities across the country.

Former Chairman of the National Campaign Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse, John Mututho, echoed Mrs. Rigathi’s concerns and urged the government to intensify efforts to combat illicit alcohol and substance abuse. Mututho emphasized the necessity of bolstering rehabilitation services to provide support for individuals struggling with addiction.

Speaking on the deficiencies in current rehabilitation services, Mututho highlighted the stark contrast between the overwhelming number of clinical addicts and the limited capacity of government-run facilities. With approximately 10.2 million clinical addicts nationwide, Mututho emphasized the urgent need for expanded resources to accommodate those seeking recovery.

In light of the magnitude of the challenge, Mututho proposed a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing the issue within a rigorous three-month framework. He pledged his expertise and resources to support the government in implementing effective measures to combat illicit alcohol and substance abuse.

The call to action from both Mrs. Dorcas Rigathi and John Mututho underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative for decisive intervention. As the nation grapples with the devastating consequences of alcohol-related accidents and substance abuse, urgent measures must be taken to safeguard public safety and promote health and well-being for all citizens.
