Senate Education Committee to Amend Legislation of Children with Special Needs
The Senate Education Committee is set to amend legislation that will take care of children with special needs.
Speaking during a press briefing, Uasin Gishu County governor Jonathan Bii said that people with disabilities are part of the society and that they deserve better treatment.
The committee is currently undertaking a fact-finding mission in our County, focusing on children with special needs in selected institutions.
“The primary objective is to gather essential information that will contribute to the enhancement of a special education Bill presently under consideration in the Senate.
“As a County, we are very sensitive about people with special needs because they are part of us. They require serious legislations to take care of their needs,” said the Uasin Gishu County boss.
Governor Bii called upon the Committee to support Eldoret town in its transformation to becoming a city.
“Eldoret town is strategically positioned and is also the headquarters of the Northrift Economic Bloc (NOREB. Upgrading Eldoret into a City will bring more Investors, and business community and create employment opportunities for many graduates”, Added Bii.
The Senate Education Committee Chairperson and also the senator for Murang’a County Joe Nyutu acknowledged Governor Bii for introducing sponsoring the milk feeding program in ECDE schools which has led to improvement of enrolled learners.
“ECDE Children from other Counties are sneaking into Uasin Gishu to enroll into ECDE schools because of the Milk Program”
Professor Margaret Kamar said that the Committee of Education is currently considering bills attaching to learners with disabilities because they are the responsibilities of the nation.
“Article 53 of the constitution demands that every child has the right to education, right to health, and right to health. We are going to visit Eldoret school for the Hearing Impaired Kapsoya, Eldoret school for the Mentally Handicapped, llula integrated school for albino Eldoret and integrated school for austism in racecourse eldoret ”added the Professor.
Accompanying the Chairperson were committee members, including Vice Chair Hon. Peris Tobiko (nominated), Hon. Prof. Margaret Kamar (nominated), Hon. Agnes Kavindu Muthama (Machakos), and Hon. Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta).
