Sh30 million “Wezesha Vijana” Program to Address Youth Unemployment
The County government has embarked on implementation of Sh30 million “WEZESHA VIJANA” program targeting to address youth unemployment.
Addressing youth forum at Kamwosor Social Hall department of Youth Affairs CEC Purity Koima challenged the participants to warm up to utilize the initiative championed by H.E Governor Wisely Rotich.
Rotich administration has set aside Sh15 million while a development partner Kenya Commercial Bank KCB will inject another Sh.15 million.
According to Mike Mosi, the director Sports and Youth Affairs, the initiative dubbed ‘Tujiajiri’ is intended to Sponsor youth to undertake technical courses in local Vocational Training Centres VTCs.
Upon their graduation, the beneficiaries will be equipped with relevant tools of trade with which they will use to begin to put their skills into practice and generate income.
Ms. Purity Kiptoo, an official from the department said Chepkorio Vocational Training Centre, Kapchorua, Iten, Chebara, Kiplabai Koitilial and Chesongoch are among institutions earmarked for the program.
Once every student graduate from the training they will be required to form a social network with which they may register and apply for tenders as group, said Kiptoo.
Motor vehicle Engineering, Electrical and Plumbing amongst other courses are listed in the courses’ list presented by the official.
Addressing thesame gathering, Edwin Kibor, the CEC Education and Technical Training challenged the youth to be ambitious and strive to be creative to free themselves from the chains of poverty.
“You got to become risk takers. Remember you are the leaders of today not tomorrow. No one was born a failure and therefore no human is limited,”said Kibor.
The youth participants were also taken through other empowerment programs which included life skills and drug abuse.
Samwel Kipchumba, director Education and Technical Training who is also coordinating the governor’s PEPEA flagship program encouraged the youth to join the students’ airlifting bandwagon.
Although controversy has marred a students’ scholarship program for students from a nearby County studying in Europe, Kipchumba sought to assure Elgeyo Marakwet residents that the process handled by Elgeyo Marakwet was transparent and above board.
“We also pray for our neighbors whose children are facing deportation in Finland so that this matter doesn’t affect the spirit of those who harbor dreams to explore greener pastures abroad,” said Kipchumba.
