Simat/Kapseret Ward MCA, Moses Kipchumba Kebenei, has expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating CS Interior Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President following the recent impeachment process. Kebenei emphasized that this move aligns with Kenya’s democratic principles, noting that the Constitution allows such transitions through established legal processes.

“We are not saying that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made mistakes,” he clarified. “This is a democratic country governed by a written Constitution, and impeachment is part of the process. We have seen in the past two weeks how it is done.”

Kebenei further called for a broader national discussion on the possibility of activating the recall clause within the Constitution. “Kenyans should explore if it is feasible to recall members who are not serving their roles, from the President down to MCA level. When a constitutional provision becomes practical, we should embrace it.”

He lauded the progress made in holding leaders accountable, adding that the recent impeachment of a Deputy President is unprecedented not only in Kenya but also across Africa. “Years ago, we only saw impeachment processes applied to governors and county CECs, but now it has reached the Deputy President’s office. This is the first time it has happened in Africa or elsewhere.”

The MCA also reflected on his concerns with the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, particularly regarding regional profiling. “The only issue I had with him was his attempt to become a regional kingpin for Mt. Kenya, which I viewed as tribal profiling,” Kebenei said.

He urged the newly nominated Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, to act as a unifying figure for all Kenyans. “As the symbol of national unity, the Deputy President should preach peace, and his utterances should foster harmony across the country,” Kebenei concluded.
