Sirikwa Squatters Group has filed a contempt of court case against the Police at the Eldoret High Court after they failed to provide them security while subdividing the land.

The Court had given the Over 1000 Sirikwa Squatters Group court order giving them the green light to hire a surveyor to map out section of the land that is under dispute for subdivision of land to squatters.
The police were to provide security during the whole exercise.

Speaking to the press At the Eldoret High Court chairman Benjamin Cherono said despite serving them with court orders thye ignored them completely.

“Today we have filed a contempt of court case against the Kapseret Sub-county OCPD,OCS Eldoret South, and OCS Kiambaa police station for refusing to obey court orders after the Court directed them to offer us security while we are subdividing our land,” said Cherono while speaking to the press.

“We went to the station on Monday morning and we were told that thee order can’t be effected and for sure it hasn’t been implemented why are they doing this to us despite court orders,” he added.

Wilfred Kirwa Tanui one of the squatters said it’s sad that despite the Court giving them a go ahead they are being frustrated left right and center.

“We came very early in the morning to do the subdivision of the land as directed by the court but unfortunately we were denied entrance by the police, we were wondering whose orders are thye serving,’ he said.

“Last week Friday we wrote a letter to the police telling them that on Monday 30th we will subdivide the land surprisingly we were told by OCPD that it is impossible. As Sirikwa squatters we are tired and we want justice since it has now been a tug of war between us and the police,” said Samuel Rono another squatter.

The more than 1,000 squatters have been embroiled in a land ownership tussle with the family of the late Mark Too since 2007.

In the order by Justice Elijah Obaga, surveyors were to set up beacons and map out public utilities from the disputed land.

Public institutions in the contested farm include the Eldoret International Airport, Moi University, public primary and secondary schools, and public roads.
The squatters went to court in 2007 and sued the various government departments, Lonrho Agribusiness East Africa Company, Mark Too, David Korir and others for grabbing their land.
