The situation in Sudan is dire: Millions of people have been displaced while lives lost has hit more than 2,000. The intensity and scale of the humanitarian crisis is a harrowing tragedy that calls for a bold and an all-inclusive peace dialogue.

The IGAD Quartet States implores the parties to this conflict to declare and observe an unconditional ceasefire and establish a humanitarian zone — spanning a radius of 30 kilometres in Khartoum — to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

This step will lead to the resumption of the final phase of the political process, paving way for the formation of an inclusive transitional process that will lay the foundation for sustainable peace, stable and prosperous Sudan.

During the IGAD Quartet Heads of State and Government meeting on Sudan in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Present were Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, Djibouti Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and representatives from South Sudan and parties to the conflict.

Hon Asha took a moment to share with us her thoughts and she said:

“Regrettably the waring parties intransigently turned down the African peace initiative! However hopefully the international community including African union will continue to pressure the waring parties in Sudan to accept peaceful resolution to this uncalled for war.”
