Some politicians fund violence using CDF Money,Governor Natembeya says
Governor George Natembeya surprised attendees at a peace summit on Thursday when he revealed that a significant portion of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) money in the North Rift region is being used to finance violence.
Speaking at the summit in Kitale , Natembeya stated that some politicians were misusing these funds to purchase firearms and support other criminal activities, which they then utilize to secure re-election.
He expressed regret that the same politicians responsible for instigating violence were being re-elected by the very victims they had harmed.
The governor urged residents to reject such politicians when the next elections come around.
Furthermore, he called for collaborative efforts between the partners involved in peace-building and the North Rift Economic Bloc (Noreb) to achieve lasting peace in the region.
Natembeya implored the partners to closely cooperate with Noreb to eliminate war and conflict from the area.
On his part, west Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, also present at the summit, recognized the significant contributions made by religious leaders in restoring peace to the region.
He further highlighted the support provided by various development partners who have partnered to promote peace-building initiatives.
Governor Kachapin stressed the paramount importance of peace and called upon all stakeholders to work together for its realization.
He emphasized that regional development depends heavily on the establishment of peace, noting that areas where religion and education have been embraced have already experienced restored peace.
He added that neglect and cattle rustling were prevalent issues in these areas in the past.
The governor advocated for the disarmament of criminals to ensure long-lasting peace. He acknowledged that insufficient resources had hampered the effectiveness of security bodies operating in the region.
To address the issue, he urged the government to implement strategies similar to those employed by Ugandan President Museveni to combat insecurity among pastoralists in Uganda.
Governor Kachapin also called upon the government to take action against individuals who promote hatred between communities in the region.
He emphasized that the failure to hold such leaders accountable perpetuates animosity and fosters a sense of impunity among the populace.
