The National Assembly Special Funds Account Committee has raised concerns regarding the mounting debts affecting the operations of the Government Press.

Chaired by Hon. Fatuma Zainab (Migori), the Committee convened a meeting with the Government Press, led by Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Hassan Ali, to address audit queries related to the Government Press Fund.

Drawing from Auditor General reports, lawmakers sought explanations regarding the collection of debts that have remained unresolved for more than five years. During the meeting, the CEO mentioned the establishment of a dedicated section called Costing, solely aimed at debt recovery.

The Committee heard that a significant portion-about 70%, of the Government Press printing machinery dates to between 1930 and 1980. The lawmakers also learnt that reliance on outdated equipment had resulted in high maintenance expenses.

Members of the Committee further questioned the CEO about the absence of a policy for asset replacement, emphasizing the necessity of upgrading the machinery.

The legislators urged the Government Press team to devise strategies and introduce additional initiatives aimed at enhancing their resource mobilization efforts, such as expanding into printing Kenyan passports.

The Committee called upon Abdi Hassan to initiate necessary reforms within the organization, with an assurance of their commitment to compile a report outlining recommendations aimed at improving the efficiency of the Government Press.
