State Department for Mining Holds Capacity Building Workshop to Enhance Governance in Mineral Sector
The State Department for Mining recently conducted a four-day capacity building workshop aimed at bolstering governance within the mineral sector. The event, graced by PS Mining Elijah Mwangi on behalf of Cabinet Secretary H.E. Salim Mvurya, gathered Regional Mining Officers (RMOs) from across Kenya, alongside senior officials from the department.
In his opening remarks, PS Elijah Mwangi emphasized the crucial role of good governance, transparency, and accountability in resource utilization. He underscored that the financial resources allocated to regional offices are intended to facilitate efficient service delivery and ensure client satisfaction.
Mwangi urged officers to provide extension services and proactively monitor mining operations within their jurisdictions to guarantee proper licensing and prevent illegal activities that jeopardize Kenya’s resources.
“As guardians of our nation’s mineral wealth, it is imperative for officers to remain vigilant and combat illegal mining activities,” Mwangi stated.
Highlighting the pivotal position of the mining sector in Kenya’s economic transformation journey, Mwangi reiterated the department’s commitment to supporting sustainable exploitation of mineral resources while eradicating criminal activities such as theft and smuggling.
The workshop delved into critical governance areas including procurement, internal audit processes, budget management, and the operationalization of Artisanal Mining Committees. Additionally, attendees discussed strategies for enhancing mineral data generation to improve mapping efforts at the county level.
The initiative reflects the government’s proactive stance in promoting responsible resource management and fostering a conducive environment for the mining sector’s growth. With a renewed focus on governance and transparency, stakeholders aim to propel Kenya towards becoming a hub for sustainable mineral exploitation, driving economic prosperity for the nation.
