State Department of Irrigation in Partnership With State Department For Correctional Services to Increase Area Under Irrigation and Irrigate 9,000 Acres For Food Production

Principal Secretary State Department for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, on Monday hosted his counterpart Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Dr. Salome M. Beacco, who paid him a courtesy call.

The two Principal Secretaries centered on areas of collaboration and majorly how the State Department for Irrigation would facilitate in irrigating 9,000 acres of land under the State Department for Correctional Services which will come in handy in increasing area under irrigation and food production, output ranging from rice, maize, tea, coffee, sunflower and other high value crops.

The discussion also evaluated the existing infrastructure in relation to the current output and what needs to be done to ensure maximisation of the available land.

State Department for Irrigation in regards to its mandate will ensure increase in land under irrigation as per the Government’s agenda on climate resilience for food security, while working with like-minded MDAs to achieve its target of bridging maize and rice deficit in the country.

Also in attendance were technical officers from the two State Departments.
