State moves to quell Kerio Valley chaos
Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya has ordered security agents to restore sanity in the volatile Kerio Valley pointing out that the region could be gazetted as disturbed ahead of a disarmament exercise.
Natembeya also asked residents to send their children to school forthwith, assuring that their safety will be guaranteed.
“There should be no institution which will remain closed as a result of insecurity,” said the RC who was accompanied by the Rift Valley regional Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission TSC directors.
Livestock movement in the area has also been banned unless a movement permit is issued, said Natembeya.
Natembeya also read the riot act to all Provincial Administration chiefs whose areas will be host to stollen Livestock.
The RC was speaking in Kinyanch, Bartabwa location in Baringo County today during a security meeting attended by Governors Alex Tolgos, (Elgeyo Marakwet) Stanely Kiptis, (Baringo) alongside area County Commissioners Henry Wafula and Omar Ahmed.
The area has witnessed sporadic wave of lawlessness associated with cattle rustling and banditry in the recent weeks.
Governor Tolgos condemned the vandalism of a bridge in Arror and Civilian patrols that characterized the spate of violence in the area.
“We have witnessed a completely unacceptable conduct where armed civilians have been patrolling a border bridge and profiling road users and this is absurd,” decried Tolgos.
Tolgos added:” The lawlessness must cease and the communities should live in harmony as they lived before,”
According to the local administrators, Nine People lost lives with 540 livestock stollen by cattle rustlers in the last three months.
Governor Kiptis said presence of illegal guns in the hands of civilians compounded by poverty is a necessary evil that breed a behaviour.
The governor beseeched the Marakwet to return 17 cattle stolen from Tugen owners.
“This being an electioneering period, we appeal to our People to end cattle rustling because it is a dangerous menace,” said Kiptis.
Arror and Barwesa MCAs Christopher Chemosong and Reuben Chepsongol, Elgeyo County Secretary Paul Chemuttut amongst other leaders were in attendance.
