In a significant move to bolster the local mango industry, the MSEA (Mango Sector Empowerment Alliance), the County Department of Cooperative and Trade, and Milli Processors have come together to create a strategic partnership aimed at linking mango farmers directly with processors. This collaboration is set to enhance the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in Tana River County, a region where mango farming is a vital economic lifeline.

During a recent meeting, stakeholders agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will outline the framework for this partnership. The MoU will be presented to Milli Processors as the first step toward establishing a formal contract for the supply of mangoes, ensuring that farmers have a reliable market for their produce.

Mango farming in Tana River is crucial, with over 30,000 farmers contributing to the local economy. The region produces more than 50,000 tons of mangoes each season, transporting over 35,000 tons to markets in Mombasa, Garissa, and Nairobi. However, the sector has faced challenges, particularly in addressing post-harvest losses. The government has responded by launching the Integrated Fruit Processing Plant, a Sh245 million initiative aimed at reducing waste and enhancing value addition for local fruits.

This project, implemented by the Coast Development Authority, was initiated in 2017 but has seen slow progress due to financial constraints. Nevertheless, the establishment of the processing plant is expected to significantly impact the local mango economy, especially during the peak mango season from October to March.

With this new partnership, stakeholders are optimistic about creating a sustainable supply chain that will benefit both farmers and processors, ultimately leading to increased income for farmers and a more robust mango industry in Tana River County.
