By John Waithaka
New Delhi, India: Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Geoffrey Kaituko, is advancing Kenya’s maritime agenda on the global stage. During the ongoing Great Oceans Conference in New Delhi, Kaituko held bilateral discussions with key stakeholders to enhance Kenya’s position in the blue economy and maritime security.
In a meeting with Dr. Amzath Ahmed, the Maldives’ Minister of State for Fisheries and Oceans Resources, Kaituko emphasized the strategic importance of the Maldives. “Maldives is at the heart of the major maritime routes in the Indian Ocean and is a very important partner in the development of blue and ocean-based economies across the region,” he stated. The dialogue underscored the need for collaborative efforts to unlock the potential of the Indian Ocean’s resources while fostering sustainable economic growth.
Earlier today, Kaituko also met with India’s National Maritime Security Coordinator, Vice Admiral G. Ashok Kumar, to solidify maritime security cooperation between Kenya and India. The discussions focused on strengthening the implementation of the BAHARI Vision Statement on Maritime Safety and Stability in the Indian Ocean Region, a joint framework signed in December 2023 by Kenya’s President and India’s Prime Minister.
“This productive meeting reaffirms our shared commitment to fostering peace, safety, and stability across the Indian Ocean region,” Kaituko remarked.
The engagements highlight Kenya’s proactive role in championing sustainable maritime development and regional security, aligning with the country’s blue economy agenda.
