Students Speak on New University and TVETs Funding
President William Ruto now says the government will fully cater to education costs of vulnerable and extremely needy students who comprise around 29 percent of the student population joining university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training(TVETs) this year through government scholarships, loans, and bursaries.
This is now a new university and TVETs funding model aimed at primarily benefiting needy students.
Caleb Bii, Secretary General for TVET’s institutions, has urged the government to explain the percentage the parents are expected to pay despite the high cost of living facing the nation.
“Now that the government has hiked the school fees, we would want to know the amount that the government will pay and the amount expected to be paid by the parents with this rising and tough economy of our country”, said the secretary general.
He also urged the Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) CEO Charles Ringera to help them get the loan faster for it to cater to their school fees.
“We want to ask Mr.Ringera to kindly release the HELB loan as fast as possible now that the government has decided to hike the fee since we need the loan to help us in paying off our fees”, added Caleb.
On the other hand, he urged the government to explain the criteria expected to be used to identify the needy students who will be dispersed on the HELB loan.
“We would want to know which criteria the government is going to use to disperse the loans to the less fortunate because not all orphans are needy and not all students who have both parents alive are fortunate, “said the secretary-general for TVET institutions.
