TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MHM PROGRAM TO UPSCALE IT ACROSS THE COUNTY- DR OSIA
Busia Agriculture Executive, Dr Moses Osia has urged officers in various departments to take advantage of the USAID/ Western Kenya Sanitation Project (WKSP) to improve sanitation across the county.
Addressing participants at close of day two of the project funded by USAID to the tune of Ksh380 million and implemented by WKSP for the next five years, Dr Osia who is also acting water executive noted that the project has come at the right time.
” On hygiene, most departments in the county are low in terms of sanitation. With the roll out of this project it will be able to reach many people in both urban and rural areas,” he said.
Dr Osia added: ” It’s not the Governor or County Executive Committee Members to execute the project but it’s you the technical officers. This can be achieved through good planning.”
The CECM thanked USAID for supporting the County Government of Busia in realizing its objectives through the program that will run until February, 2027.
He said the County Government was committed to implementing the program for the next five years, noting that the county is leading in terms of implementing MHM with four champions hailing from the county.
” I am optimistic the project will increase availability of MHM products and services that address the needs of women and girls. It will also help expand behaviour change and marketing campaigns for improve MHM practices,” he noted.
USAID’S move to rollout the project was atttributed to the fact that access to basic sanitation in Western Kenya remains low, at less than 30 percent in urban areas and 50% in rural communities.
Access to MHM products is also low due to affordability and availability resulting from distribution challenges, stigma, inadequate education and lack of awareness.
