The Cabinet Lifts Ban on the cultivation of Genetically Modified crops

The Cabinet on Monday lifted the ban on the cultivation of Genetically Modified crops.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by president William Ruto.

The meeting also authorized the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology innovations.

“The decision effectively lifts restrictions on the cultivation and importation of GMO crops in the country,” said president Ruto.

The decision by the Cabinet, chaired by President William Ruto at State House today, was made in accordance with the recommendation of the Task Force to Review Matters Relating to Genetically Modified Foods and Food Safety.

The meeting was convened to consider the progress made in the response to the ongoing drought in the country.

President Ruto also inspected the ongoing affordable and social housing project at the former Meteorological Site in Nairobi County.

He said that the Government is committed to ensuring Kenyans have access to quality and low-cost houses noting that the move will help tackle urban poverty and improve the lives of low-income households.

“Adequate housing is at the core of our Government’s programmes and policies,” he noted.
President Ruto said the dwelling units will have sufficient access to electricity, safe water, sanitation and with a security of tenure.This deliberate move will enhance equal opportunities to all and ensure sustainable economic growth in our country,” said president Ruto.
