The Eldoret National Polytechnic Hosts 14th Africa RCE Conference on Climate Action and Sustainability
The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) recently hosted the 14th Africa Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) conference, focusing on “The Role of RCEs in Climate Action, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” The event, held from August 28 to 30, brought together a diverse group of participants from across Africa and around the globe to discuss pressing environmental issues and collaborative solutions.
Among the distinguished attendees were Dr. Akpezi Ogbuigwe from Nigeria, the United Nations University (UNU) RCE’s Regional Adviser for Africa; Prof. Pierluigi Bozzi from Italy, affiliated with the International University Network on Cultural Biological Diversity; Prof. Samson Kofi Kye of Kumasi Technical University, Ghana; Dr. William Theanyi Eke of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria; Dr. Adeolu Odusote from Nigeria; and John Linus from UNESCO. The event was hosted by Dr. Catherine Mbaisi, Deputy Director of Environmental Education and Awareness at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and Prof. Vincent Sudoi of the University of Eldoret.
The conference provided a platform for African youth to discuss their role in climate action, ESD, and the SDGs. They emphasized the importance of a unified approach to tackle sustainability challenges and promote environmental stewardship.
In his address, Chief Principal Charles Koech reiterated TENP’s commitment to climate action, environmental conservation, and the UN’s SDGs. He highlighted the pivotal role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, particularly TENP, in equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary for transitioning to greener economies and societies.
The conference underscored the crucial role of educational institutions and youth in driving sustainable development and climate action, fostering a collaborative approach to address the urgent environmental challenges facing the region and the world.
