Thoughts From MELTA Chair on Nairobi County Plans to Double License

Mr. Frank Mbogo the Chairman of Medium Liquor Traders Association MELTA has taken a moment to share his thoughts.

“We acknowledge The Nairobi City County’s plans of doubling the current license annual fees.

This means that all premises selling alcoholic drinks within Nairobi will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets to acquire the trading licenses despite the currently surging economic times experienced Nationally.

Going by the proposal in the Nairobi City County draft finance Bill 2023 currently before the Nairobi City County Assembly budget and appropriation Committee for consideration, in addition to the Bill, there are ongoing plans of charging pool tables within entertainment joints which is unrealistic less the County Government forgets that pool is currently recognized as a sport global and deserves acknowledgement.

It’s our clarion call as MELTA ( Small and Medium Liquor Traders Association) that the County considers activating a GENUINE and all inclusive Public Participation as a way of gathering the Liquor stakeholders’ views and input in regards to the draft which might lead to job loss, unfriendly business environment, business closure as well as decline in revenue collection from a business entity which contributes a reasonable share to the County’s revenue collection.

Failure to adhering to our request as Liquor Traders leaves us with no option but to seek for further course of action.”
