TOLGOS URGES THE CHURCH TO PREACH PEACE IN THE VOLATILE VALLEY
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor HE. Alex Tolgos has called on the Church to participate in peace building in the banditry ravaged Kerio Valley.
Tolgos said evangelism and inter-denominational prayers could be an alternative mechanism in reaching out to young people in persuading them to accept Christ and turn away from wickedness.
The evil activities associated with cattle rustling and banditry could be eradicated completely if some communities embraced civilization.
“Even as the law enforcement agencies deals with criminal elements who perpetuate insecurity, we call on our Churches to intervene in Preaching the word of the cross so that those who will accept may repent and change their ways,” said Tolgos.
The Governor challenged the religious leaders to come together and join the government in seeking lasting solution along the boundaries of Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot Counties.
Speaking today during the official opening of a church building at St. Peter’s Kipsoen Catholic in Kamariny ward, the County chief reiterated the need for leaders to join hands in fighting the insecurity which he said has affected the region’s economic growth.
“Lasting peace will only be realized through community engagement and social interactions instead of creating a rift between the communities ” he said.
The Governor also called on the National Government to consider compensating those who may have lost their loved ones alongside property during the cross-border aggression.
Catholic Diocese of Eldoret Bishop Rt. Rev Dominic Kimengich on his part urged political leaders to avoid uttering inflammatory statements that cause animosity among communities.
“As we are approaching the political season, I urge politicians to embrace peace,” he said.
Also present included Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich, roads CEC Kevin Biwott, Iten Municipal manager Raymond Omonei among other leaders.
