Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya has amplified his administration’s efforts to mitigate floods in lowland areas, particularly in Mukuyuni, to safeguard farmers from losses incurred during heavy rainfall. The measures come after devastating floods led to the loss of one elderly woman’s life and forced 120 households to evacuate, seeking refuge at Mukuyuni Primary School as their homes were submerged.

Governor Natembeya, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, stated, “Records of those affected need to be taken for quick response in case of flooding or blocked roads.” He assured residents that the County Disaster Management Team is actively monitoring rainfall to implement prompt responses where necessary.

The flooding, attributed to River Sabwani bursting its banks, has affected several areas including Mandarara, Ndarara, and Soimining. Governor Natembeya affirmed the county government’s commitment to collaborating with the National Government and other stakeholders to alleviate the plight of affected residents.

Additionally, Governor Natembeya vowed to combat cartels behind the illegal grabbing of Settlement Fund Trustee (SFT) land allocated to the poor. He urged County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi to clamp down on these cartels operating in collusion with officials from the Land Ministry’s Kitale Office.

Residents, grateful for the swift government response, praised the relocation efforts, acknowledging that it saved them from displacement. Mary Nekesa, a Mukuyuni resident, expressed relief and gratitude for the quick action, despite personal losses incurred.

Kefa Were, representing the Kapomboi County Assembly, lauded the government’s swift provision of excavators to clear clogged trenches and advised residents to relocate to higher ground to safeguard themselves from overflowing rivers.

County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi reiterated the need for residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer grounds, warning of forced removal if necessary. He also cautioned against illicit activities targeting flood victims, stating that those found selling chang’aa (illicit alcohol) to flood victims would face legal consequences.

Various county officials and stakeholders attended the meeting, including County Secretary Truphosa Amere, Chief Officers, and representatives from the Kenya Red Cross. The County Security team, led by the County Commissioner, also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents amidst the ongoing flood crisis.
