Trans Nzoia County Launches Ukombozi Elimu Bursary Fund to Empower Students

In a landmark event held today at the Kitale ASK Showground, Governor George Natembeya unveiled the 2024 beneficiaries of the Ukombozi Elimu Bursary Programme, a county government initiative aimed at supporting students until the completion of their secondary education.

The programme, described by Natembeya as a “revolutionary” step towards educational empowerment, promises to cover all expenses for the selected students, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their academic goals without financial burden.

“Today, we tell a story of opportunities and fulfilment,” Natembeya stated, addressing the assembly of teachers, parents, and students. “Our students are the beacon of hope, and with discipline, respect, and hard work, they will excel in their educational journey.”

The Ukombozi Elimu Bursary Programme is a response to the challenges faced by many students in the county, including financial constraints, societal pressures, and personal struggles. With a completion rate of only 50% despite a 100% transition rate, the county’s educational statistics have been underwhelming. The governor’s administration is determined to change this narrative by ensuring a 100% completion rate within the next two years.

Last year’s demand for the bursary exceeded expectations, leading to an increase in funding from 120 million to 150 million Kenyan Shillings, allowing for 12,062 beneficiaries in 2024, comprising 6,617 scholarships and 5,445 bursaries.

Natembeya also highlighted the administration’s commitment to quality education, the improvement of day schools, and the support of small-scale farmers to alleviate poverty and hunger, thereby creating a conducive learning environment for students.

The governor called upon national assembly members to collaborate in enhancing the infrastructure of schools and reaffirmed his dedication to the Ukombozi Promise, ensuring that no student is left behind.

Natembeya further addressed the pressing issues of teenage pregnancies and access to sanitary towels, pledging to support affected girls and ensure that menstruation does not hinder their education.
