Trans Nzoia County Pushes for Talent Development, Eyes Regional Athletics Dominance
Trans Nzoia County is revving up its support for athletic talent development, aiming to maintain its position as a powerhouse in the sport and nurture future world champions.
This commitment was reiterated today by Chief Officer of Sports, Gender, Culture, and Tourism Jane Wachwenge during the Athletics Kenya (AK) trials at the Kitale National Showgrounds, where the county team for the upcoming regional championships was selected.
Wachwenge emphasized Trans Nzoia’s rich history in producing legendary athletes like Moses Kiptanui, Wesley Korir, and Billy Kosgei, highlighting the potential and desire to invest in further talent development.
The recently concluded Governor’s Cup tournament is testament to this, showcasing young athletes across various sports, with athletics a key focus.
Building on the success of the cup, Wachwenge announced plans for a Governor George Natembeya Athletics Competition, offering further incentive and recognition to young athletes, mirroring the support already extended to football teams. This reinforces the Governor’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent at all levels.
Aware of the pitfalls of doping, Wachwenge strongly advised young athletes against engaging in such practices, urging them to embrace clean competition and safeguard their careers. Discipline, both in training and dietary choices, was also emphasized as crucial to athletic success.
The trials were fiercely contested, showcasing the depth of talent in Trans Nzoia. Athletics Kenya Trans Nzoia County Branch Chairman Andrew Rotich expressed confidence in the selected team, predicting that Trans Nzoia will reclaim its top spot in the upcoming regional championships in West Pokot County.
Since the competition’s inception, Trans Nzoia has consistently dominated, only relinquishing the title once to Elgeyo Marakwet.
Rotich highlighted the need for improved sports facilities, commending the construction of the Kenyatta Stadium under Governor Natembeya’s leadership.
He urged both county and national governments to prioritize further infrastructure development to nurture sporting talent.
Local leaders, including members of county assemblies, parliament, and the senate, were also called upon by Rotich to extend their support to athletics at the grassroots level.
Facilitating participation in trials and local competitions will be crucial in identifying and empowering future champions.
