Trans Nzoia County administration is set to tackle youth unemployment head-on, as Governor George Natembeya announced plans to employ 1,000 youths through the Kazi Mashinani initiative in the upcoming fiscal year. Speaking on Thursday at the Bikeke Primary School in Kiminini sub-county during this year’s Madaraka Day Celebrations, Governor Natembeya emphasized the administration’s unwavering dedication to reducing unemployment rates by implementing development projects and programs that directly benefit the residents.
Turning his attention to the prevailing economic situation, Governor Natembeya expressed deep concern over the widening wealth gap and called on national leaders to explore alternative methods of revenue enhancement that do not burden Kenyans with excessive taxes. Recognizing the economic challenges faced by the people, the governor reassured them of his commitment to serve diligently, even amidst obstacles.
Acknowledging the need for improvement in various sectors, Governor Natembeya specifically highlighted the education system, pledging efforts to raise educational standards within the county. Furthermore, he acknowledged the shortcomings in the recent vetting process for the county Elimu bursaries and assured the public that his administration would provide further training to officials to ensure more efficient vetting procedures in the future.
Encouraging residents to register their companies and groups, Governor Natembeya stressed the importance of ensuring they can benefit from government tenders. To facilitate this, county officers will soon commence training programs on company registration throughout the county. The governor remained steadfast in his commitment to enhance the standard of living, placing priority on alleviating poverty. He urged residents to diligently work towards achieving development goals while condemning any political activities that hinder progress.
Taking a firm stance against land grabbing, Governor Natembeya issued a stern warning that such actions would not be tolerated within the county. The expansion of Kitale town has been impeded due to land scarcity, prompting the need for swift action to address the issue. Additionally, the governor announced the impending disbursement of the Nawiri Fund to empower businesspersons and support income-generating activities.
In terms of infrastructure development, Governor Natembeya unveiled plans to upgrade Kiminini Center to a town and eventually a municipality, signaling progress and growth for the area. He expressed regret over the irregular disbursement of funds from the National Government, which has hampered county operations. In response, he pledged to continue reducing the cost of doing business within the county.
Governor Natembeya also highlighted specific measures undertaken to support small businesses. Notably, the annual fee for bodaboda operators has been significantly reduced from Ksh 3,600 to Ksh 500, relieving financial burdens on operators. Furthermore, small businesses now only pay Ksh 20 per day, down from Ksh 40, showcasing the governor’s commitment to nurturing local enterprises within the county.
