Trans-Nzoia Governor Commemorates Nurses Week, Highlights Role of Nurses in Economic Growth

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya led the commemoration of the Nurses Week, at the Kitale Showground. The event highlighted the significant contributions of nurses and midwives to the healthcare sector and the economy.

The theme for this year’s International Nurses’ and Midwives’ Week is “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care.” Natembeya emphasized that the role of nurses extends beyond the bedside, making them catalysts for economic growth.

He urged the recognition of care as a crucial factor in the economic growth of the healthcare sector.

The Governor also acknowledged the challenges faced by nurses, including physical and mental health strains. He urged them to seek necessary assistance, emphasizing the importance of their well-being in providing service to others.

The County Government of Trans Nzoia has employed 478 nurses, covering about 48% of the county’s 86 medical facilities. Natembeya announced plans to increase this coverage by 10% in the next three years and to replace 100 nurses who have exited service this financial year.

The Governor also addressed the county’s health indicators, noting the high maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate. He called for a commitment to improve these indicators, emphasizing the role of nurses in maternal health.

In response to the adverse effects of climate change currently faced by the country, the Governor praised the nurses who took the initiative to plant 15,000 trees in the county. He urged everyone to play their role in mitigating these effects.

Natembeya thanked the nurses for their resilience and commitment to serving the community. He described them as the “unsung heroes” in the healthcare system and reaffirmed his commitment to improving their welfare.
