Trans Nzoia Residents Commend County Service Delivery, Call for Improved Resource Allocation
Governor George Natembeya by the County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM), residents of Trans Nzoia have expressed overall satisfaction with the majority of services provided by the County government. The report, unveiled on Monday, highlighted the county’s excellence in nine out of 14 service areas.
According to Dr. Wanjiru Kamau, a Member of the Panel of Eminent Persons for CPRM, the areas where Trans Nzoia excelled include public participation, ECDE, health, electricity, roads, agriculture, county law enforcement, environmental conservation, and vocational training centers. However, the report also identified areas requiring improvement, notably youth development, financial services, ICT services, water and sanitation, and the provision of decent and affordable housing.
Governor Natembeya reiterated his administration’s dedication to serving the people effectively despite resource challenges. He expressed concern over the allocation of resources for devolved functions, noting that while functions were transferred, the necessary resources often remained at the national level.
“Some individuals let the functions go but resources for these functions remain at the national level, but even with the little we have, we are trying,” said Governor Natembeya. “We are transparent and look forward to having these reports.”
The governor also raised issues regarding the delayed monthly disbursements by the treasury, making it difficult to settle bills and resulting in the accumulation of pending bills. He emphasized the challenge of receiving funds from the treasury just one or two weeks before the end of the financial year, insufficient for effective spending.
Peter Kimemia, Director at Africa Peer Review Mechanism, who visited the governor, recommended that governors highlight such challenges during the upcoming summit to ensure they are addressed. County Secretary Truphosa Amere and PSM Chief Officer Philip Kapten were also present during the discussions.
As Trans Nzoia continues its journey towards enhanced service delivery, the commitment of both the county government and its residents remains steadfast, with a shared determination to address existing challenges and build a better future for all.
