Transport and Infrastructure Committee Engages With the State Department For Shipping and Maritime Affairs
The National Assembly Committee on Transport and Infrastructure chaired by Hon. George Kariuki (Ndia), met with the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs led by the Principle Secretary, Hon. Geoffrey Kaituko over the consideration of the Supplementary Budget 1 for FY 2023/24.
The Committee learned that the proposed Supplementary Estimates indicate an increase on recurrent Budget for the State Department by Kshs.19,842,776 while the Development budget has decreased by Kshs. 300,000,000.
While making his presentation, the PS said that the budget for Headquarters has been reduced by Kshs.100Million under Operations and Maintenance (O&M) out of a budget of Kshs.323Million, which approximates to a 30% reduction.
He further said that the Department has pending bills amounting to Kshs 22Million which is expected to be settled in the Current FY 2023/24 from budget under O&M of Kshs 121Million.
” This will therefore mean that the State Department will remain with Kshs.99Million for the last three Quarters of the Financial Year.” Said Hon. Kaituko.
Hon. Kaituko added that the Supplementary Budget has affected the construction of Survival Training Centre, a project under the Bandari Maritime Academy.
” The budget for the project has been reduced by Kshs.300Million from Kshs.550Million to Kshs.250 Million.” Hon. Kaituko
The Committee acknowledged the importance of the Bandari Maritime Academy.
