Uasin Gishu County Celebrates World Sight Day with Community Eye Screening
Uasin Gishu County marked World Sight Day on Sunday at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Kimumu, focusing on the theme “*Children Love Your Eyes*.” The event successfully screened over 800 children and community members, providing 300 pairs of eyeglasses to those in need.
Dr. Paul Wangwe, Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health, emphasized the county’s commitment to combatting preventable blindness and improving the quality of life for individuals affected by vision loss. “Under Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s administration, our mission is to eliminate preventable blindness and enhance the overall health of our community,” Dr. Wangwe stated.
Highlighting recent advancements, Dr. Wangwe noted that Huruma Sub County Hospital has been equipped with essential resources to better serve local residents. “Our role is to promote eye health awareness and advocate for access to quality eye care services,” he added, stressing the importance of regular eye examinations for early detection of potential issues.
Richard Cheserek, head of Huruma Sub County Hospital, echoed Dr. Wangwe’s sentiments, urging community members to utilize the hospital’s eye unit. “Early intervention can prevent the progression of eye conditions and help maintain vision,” Cheserek advised, encouraging proactive engagement from the public.
The event was made possible through a strategic partnership between the County Government and Operation Eyesight, underscoring the collaborative effort to ensure access to essential eye care services in the community.
