Uasin Gishu County Launches Mass Vaccination Campaign for Livestock

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has initiated a mass vaccination campaign aimed at protecting cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and rabies. The campaign, led by Mr. Edward Sawe, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, took place at the Mugundoi and Nairiri Cattle Dips in Cheptiret/Kipchamo Ward, Kesses Sub-County.

This proactive initiative is designed to mitigate the risks posed by these diseases, which significantly threaten livestock health and the local economy. Mr. Sawe assured farmers that the county has a sufficient supply of vaccines to meet the demands of this ongoing effort, with a target of vaccinating over 800,000 herds of cattle throughout the region.

Accompanied by Chief Officer for Livestock Mr. Nixon Cheplong and Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Philip Biama, Mr. Sawe engaged directly with local farmers. The team demonstrated the vaccination process and addressed concerns regarding the vaccines’ efficacy and safety.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cattle, sheep, and goats, often resulting in severe economic losses due to reduced productivity and trade restrictions. Rabies, primarily transmitted through bites from infected animals, remains a significant public health threat, making the vaccination of pets such as dogs and cats essential, especially in rural communities with close human-animal interactions.

Farmers are encouraged to adhere to vaccination schedules and seek guidance from veterinary officers to ensure the health of their livestock and the broader community.
