Uasin Gishu County is making remarkable strides in the implementation of the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA), a national initiative aimed at empowering local communities to address climate change through grassroots-driven projects. The program focuses on funding climate adaptation and mitigation efforts that directly involve the communities most affected by climate challenges.

This morning, Mr. Peter Odengo, the National Coordinator of FLLoCA, addressed the County Climate Unit led by Chief Officer Mary Kerich. Odengo praised Uasin Gishu’s preparedness and commended the county for aligning with the program’s objectives, noting the team’s readiness to implement the projects that could significantly enhance resilience against climate change.

“The Uasin Gishu team has demonstrated its potential to manage projects that deliver effective climate solutions. Moving forward, it’s essential that all conditions are met to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives. We urge that these projects be driven by the local communities as they are the key stakeholders in creating a resilient and sustainable future,” Odengo stated.

Echoing Odengo’s sentiments, Chief Officer Mary Kerich emphasized the importance of collaboration between the county government, national government, communities, and development partners such as the World Bank. She highlighted that 20 projects are already underway, reflecting the county’s strong commitment to addressing climate change at the local level.

“We have a well-organized team to oversee the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of these projects, ensuring that the investments bring real value. It is also crucial to ensure that the impacts reach all sectors of society, including women, youth, men, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities,” Kerich said. She also noted that all projects are being implemented on public land, ensuring broad access and equity.

The partnership between the National Climate Coordination Unit and the County Climate Unit has been key to the successful rollout of the FLLoCA program in Uasin Gishu. By ensuring that projects reflect local needs and involve community members in the process, the program is fostering climate resilience across the county.

With a focus on inclusive and sustainable development, the FLLoCA program promises to create lasting impacts in Uasin Gishu County, setting a strong example for other regions looking to build climate resilience and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
