Uasin Gishu County’s multi-agency team has joined hands in the fight against illicit brews and drug abuse in the county.

Speaking to the press, Uasin Gishu County Secretary, Edwin Bett said the County will support deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in the fight against illicit liquor.

“Illicit brews and drugs are destroying our youths. As Uasin Gishu County, we are set to back our deputy president and continue with efforts that have been put in place to fight alcohol abuse so that affected people could make meaningful lives.”
He revealed that the County has come up with a secretariat that has a plan to fight the menace.

“This fight is very important and a serious one at that. Chiefs, assistant chiefs, administrators, and the police among others will constitute the team. All the resources needed for this will be provided and as a county, we must emerge victorious against this vice,” said Bett.

He said a total of 842 bars in the County have been licensed this year, a reduction from last year to reduce the consumption and trade of alcohol in the county.

Bett revealed that the County government will support all enforcement efforts to make sure that only the licensed bars carry out operations.

Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo says the County has developed a strategy to support reformed brewers to have alternative sources of livelihood.

“ We also have plans to start rehabilitation centers to help reform the consumers, sellers, and suppliers of illegal alcohol,” said Arap Maiyo.

“So far, we know of 300 individuals who have reformed from consuming and brewing illegal alcohol. We applaud our able Governor, Jonathan Bii Chelilim for setting aside some money to capitate these reformers so that they can find decent jobs to sustain themselves and their families,” said Koiya Arap Maiyo, Alcoholic Drinks Control Board Director.
