In a significant operation this afternoon, Uasin Gishu authorities, in coordination with the Kenya Police and the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, successfully raided a location in Kongasis, leading to the confiscation of contraband alcoholic beverages valued at an estimated KSh 3.5 million.

This operation marks a notable effort in the county’s ongoing battle against the illicit alcohol trade.

Acting on intelligence gathered from local administration sources in the Soy and Moiben divisions, the joint task force was led to an abandoned house in Kongasis. Inside, they discovered a staggering 312 cartons of assorted alcoholic drinks, which were packed and stored clandestinely. The high-end value of the seized goods distinguishes this operation from others, typically involving lower-value contraband.

The successful raid and confiscation were the result of diligent coordination between multiple agencies, including officers from the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board and the Kenya Police.

The operation culminated in the arrest of one suspect, who is now assisting authorities with further investigations. The suspect’s cooperation is expected to provide crucial insights into the origins and distribution network of the contraband.

Koiya Arap Maiyo, Director of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board for Uasin Gishu, praised the multi-agency effort. “Today’s operation demonstrates the effectiveness of our coordinated approach to combatting illegal activities,” Maiyo stated. “We are committed to ensuring that such illicit operations do not find a foothold in our county.”

The authorities have emphasized that this case is under thorough investigation. The primary focus now is to ascertain whether the confiscated alcoholic beverages are stolen or counterfeit. This scrutiny will help determine the appropriate legal and regulatory actions to be taken.

Local residents and officials have expressed their gratitude for the swift action taken by the authorities. The local administration, including officers from the County Commissioner’s office, played a crucial role by providing valuable intelligence that led to the successful raid. The relationship between the county government, the national government, and the public has proven essential in the fight against illegal activities.

Uasin Gishu County and the city of Eldoret have vowed to maintain a zero-tolerance stance against the production, distribution, storage, and sale of illicit brews. The collaborative efforts of the local administration, the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, and the Kenya Police reflect a united front in this ongoing battle.

“This operation highlights our commitment to preserving the integrity of our communities and ensuring that illegal substances do not compromise the safety and well-being of our residents,” Maiyo added.

As investigations continue, authorities are calling on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The successful crackdown underscores the importance of community involvement in supporting law enforcement efforts and ensuring that justice prevails.

The Alcoholic Drinks Control Board and the Kenya Police are poised to take further actions based on the findings of the ongoing investigation. This operation not only demonstrates the efficiency of the multi-agency approach but also sets a precedent for future efforts in tackling the illicit alcohol trade in the region.
