The County Government of Uasin Gishu is set to enhance the living conditions in its informal settlements through the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP). This significant initiative aims to address various challenges in settlements such as Langas, Ngomongo, Kamukunji, Burnt Forest, Turbo Township, Cheboiywo, and Moi’s Bridge.

Dr. Janet Kosgey, the County Executive Committee member for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, emphasized the program’s targeted approach. “These settlements each present unique characteristics and challenges,” Dr. Kosgey said. “Our focus will be on infrastructure upgrades and improving living conditions through active community engagement, with the goal of creating a better environment for residents.”

The program will first assess the specific needs of each settlement and develop tailored strategies. This approach is designed to address current conditions effectively and prevent the formation of new slums.

Chief Officer of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Julius Koech, highlighted critical areas requiring intervention, including road infrastructure, water supply, waste management, sanitation, and housing quality.

Ms. Beatrice Menjo, Director of Housing, noted the synergy between the new KISIP initiative and the Government’s ongoing affordable housing program. She acknowledged the positive reception from residents, particularly those with low incomes, who stand to benefit significantly from these improvements.

Also present at the meeting were Director of Lands Ms. Nelly Jerotich and Director of Public Works Eng. Benjamin. The collaboration between these officials underscores the commitment to advancing Uasin Gishu’s urban development and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
