Uasin Residents Urged to Cover Boreholes and Lock Pit Latrines
Uasin Gishu firefighting brigade under the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works has retrieved a body of an 80-year-old man from an unused borehole at Chemaluk village, Sergoit Ward, Moiben Sub County.
Uasin Gishu Chief Fire Officer Wanyama Sitati said the man’s body was retrieved following a call from the Officer in charge at the Chepkanga police station.
Sitati urged residents of Uasin Gishu to ensure that all unused bore holes are closed completely to avoid such incidents.
He noted that in the past several bodies have been retrieved in open boreholes, poorly constructed septic tanks and uncompleted pit latrines which are dangerous to human beings and livestock.
He added that unused boreholes and latrines should be closed completely to avoid incidents of people falling unknowingly and some using them to commit suicide while others using them as dumping sites for aborted foetuses/children.
The body of the deceased was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Mortuary as police continued with an investigation into the cause of the death.
