Uniting the Youth to Strengthen the Nguzo
The County Government of Uasin Gishu puts youth as a segment whose potentiality requires harnessing to bring forth societal economic growth.
Inspired by Governor Jonathan Bii’s “Nguzo Namba Tano” on youth empowerment, the Department is already rolling out programs that aim to muscle up the youthful generation to transform their societies.
On Thursday, the Department of Youth led by County Executive, Eng Lucy Ng’endo held a meeting with leaders of youth associations across Uasin Gishu County.
The meeting primarily bade to train and sensitize the youth on the need to pull their efforts together to benefit from the opportunities set aside for them.
“First was to bring these youth together, so they can first believe in togetherness as a tool to agitate for interests,” Eng Ng’endo said.
Chief Officer, Nahum Jelagat, said: “The (county) government has alot of opportunities for our young people but then they will be benefit when they join heads and speak one language, that of willing to be empowered.”
The youth have up to 30 percent of government procurement reserved for them through the (Youth) Access to Government Opportunities (AGPO).
County Director of Youth Affairs, Peter Ruto, asked the youth to consider setting up plans that inform the level or circumstances at which they undertake certain activities as an umbrella group.
Governor’s Advisor on Youth Affairs, Fred Kirui, also emphasized on unity among the youth, for empowerment. “When one group presents an agenda and the other seems to counter, it is difficult to get assistance because the division paints a picture of doubt. We need to come together for the better.”
The groups are working on structures to establish a county youth umbrella body. Uasin Gishu youth will celebrate the International Youth Day on Saturday.
