University of Eldoret Holds its 9th Virtual Graduation Ceremony

It was pomp and color after University of Eldoret hed its 9th Virtual Graduation Ceremony .

 

The event took place at the University’s New Site (NS) Building, and graced by Amb. Simon Nabukwesi the Principal Secretary State Department for University Education and Research

A total of 1809 graduands comprising of 20 PhDs, 44 Masters, 10 Post-Graduate Diploma, 1650 Bachelor’s Degree and 85 ordinary diploma were conferred and awarded with their honors.

 

Speaking during the graduation Ceremony Vice Chancellor Prof Teresia Akenga urged graduands to  fully embrace digital technology going forward.

 

“You also need to exploit your full potential to achieve your objectives irrespective of your social, religious and economic orientations,” she said.

A total of 1809 graduands, comprising of 20 Ph.Ds, 44 Master 39’s Degrees, 10 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1650 Bachelor’s Degrees, and 85 ordinary Diplomas.

She says the  University has endeavored to ensure that it meets its mandate as an institution of higher learning.

“Currently the University has a total student population of over 10,000, and in the 2020/2021 academic year we managed to receive over 1,800 new students through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS),”

Prof Akenga says to improve on knowledge acquisition and Service Delivery, the University’s Eldoret Town Campus has been awarded accreditation as a Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) centre by TVETA as the regulatory body.

 

“This will greatly enhance access to education particularly for Diploma students in the areas of practical skills. Madam Chancellor, our Eldoret Town Campus being strategically located, I believe, in the near future it will be a bee-hive of academic activities,” she said.

She says the University has also set up  modalities to commence the offering of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc.N) programme in September 2022 to meet the high demand of the programme within the region and beyond.

 

She says her administration has established the Directorate of Open, Distance and e- Learning (ODeL) and appointed a substantive Director as a means of expanding the channels of teaching and  Trained lecturers and students on how to access and use the e-Learning platforms, with adequate benchmarkingprogrammes being conducted by the Directorate from already established institutions.

 

“We have also Invested heavily in upgrading and expanding our ICT infrastructure from an initial 120mbps in 2019 one accommodating less than 2,000 learners to 509.58mbps one that can accommodate over 8,000 learners and ultimately all students within the e-Learning platform. TheUniversity will soon be at per with the big Universities in this critical area that is no longer a reserve of the big Universities but a pivotal platform necessary for gaining acompetitive edge,” she added.

 

On research and innovation, she says the university continues to pursue her strategic objective number two (2) aimed at positioning the University as a research center. Some of the notable advancements in this area since the last graduation include; University has attracted Kshs. 15,348,548.73 since March 2021 from a diversity of external research

funds.

 

“In realizing that the internet is the key enabler of the digital transformation, the University is on course to expand the internet bandwidth in this financial year to be at par with the approved ration of internet speed per- student as recommended by the Commission for University Education CUE). Currently, the Main Campus internet bandwidth stands at 466.32mbps, Town Campus operates at 41.26mbps and Nairobi Liaison at 2mbps, and this is an improvement from the 20% LAN coverage in

2014 to 80% in 2021,” she says.

She noted that the University is currently pursuing options of enabling students to access e-Learning devices, including laptops and affordable internet data bundles, through the limited partnerships we have.

” In order to meet our strategic objective number four (4), the university has endeavoured to build staff capacity by improving on their digital skills and proficiency, the University has partnered with resourceful stakeholders, among them the Ministry of Education. One such initiative is the Skills for Prosperity Kenya (SFPK), programme for strengthening Digital Education Capacity, in collaborationwith The Open University of the United Kingdom,”

The University also successfully held its first ever fully virtual National Conference on Wetlands under the theme “Wetlands and Water” in collaboration with National Lands Commission (NLC) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other conservation agencies and partners on 12 th -14 th May, 2021. The conference came up with collated findings which formed the platform of coming up with policy statements aimed at informing policy makers while addressing matters to do with wetlands conservation.

The Construction  the School of Economics and Business Management Sciences is currently at 98% complete and the process of handing it over to the university by the contractor has commenced, the School of Education Complex Phase II-Amphitheatre, currently at 45% while  the construction of perimeter wall phase V, currently at 55% completion among many other projects.

Speaking during the University of Eldoret 9th Virtual  Graduation State   Department for University Education and research Principal Secretary Amb. Simeon Nabukwesi who was the chief guest said the ministry will soon The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal.

 

“We will open KUCCPS portal on 1st Sepmber which will go all the to 30th September for those who wish to change to differernt universsities and intefaculty should use that opportunity since once close we will not reopen it again,” said the State   Department for University Education and research Principal Secretary.He saya students should use that opportunity to choose courses and universities of their choice where in one way or the other made a mistake.
