USAID APPOINTS TWO FOCAL PERSONS TO RUN SANITATION PROJECT IN BUSIA COUNTY
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has appointed two
focal persons to run Western Kenya Sanitation Project (WKSP) in Busia County for the next five years.
Addressing participants during the closure of the three-day Busia County Co-Creation and Inception Meeting at Hotel Breeze, Chief of Party WKSP, Dr Paul Orengoh said Mr David Nyajowi will support the project in Busia County as a market advisor.
He said Mr Nyajowi will team up with Euphresia Luseka who will lead the partnership component of the project that entails co-creation process and understanding issues and context.
Busia is among eight counties from Western Kenya region that have benefited from the Ksh.2.8billion project. Other counties include Bungoma, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Kisii.
Nyajowi said he worked in the County before under the Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation & Health (FINISH) Mondial Project whose aim was sanitation for all through an integrated model that addressed both the demand and supply side of the sanitation challenge.
“It’s a very interesting journey to come back to Busia to see that we are able again to accelerate the work we did and where we left the progress to the next level,” he said.
He added: ” Now one key takeaway is that everybody sees Busia to be the county to define market-based approaches in regards to Sanitation as well as Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in Kenya and in the world.”
Mr Nyajowi said that this is the first time that USAID has funded Sanitation as a stand-alone project, adding that these are geared towards defining measures to deliver sanitation in a sustainable manner.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) expert, Beverly Mademba lauded the County Government of Busia for taking a pivotal role in realizing improved access to sanitation across the county.
” A part from being the first county to be declared Open Defecation Free, Busia County has taken the lead in Menstrual Hygiene Management with First Lady (Judy Ojaamong) who is one of the national MHM champion embracing it,” she said, noting WKSP will upscale that noble initiative.
Ms Mademba said Busia has also pioneered the development of sanitation and market based approach countywide program which might see it become a model county to be replicated in other counties and ultimately at national level.
” Busia was also among four counties where WASH Pal study was conducted with the study showing the county is prime with drivers that are useful to creating sanitation market, thus the need to explore those drivers,” she said.
